Recent research reveals a complex picture of AI's impact on our cognitive abilities. A study from MIT led by research scientist Nataliya Kosmyna found concerning evidence that excessive reliance on AI tools can lead to cognitive atrophy: a decline in core cognitive skills like cognitive effort, metacognitive engagement (the awareness of one’s thought processes and an understanding of the patterns behind them) along with an increase in digital fatigue and loneliness with less interpersonal relationships and analytical thinking.
